A teenage girl comes of age and breaks from her Mexican family's traditions in Real Women Have Curves, a "You go, girl!" movie so sharp and well-observed and wonderfully funny that, after seeing it, you'll feel ashamed for even thinking about missing it. Patricia Cardoso's film, currently playing at the Quad Cities Brew & View, is like the best after-school special ever produced. The storyline won't set the world on fire - at times, the plotting makes it resemble a live-action Muppet movie - but all throughout it's lovingly detailed, and like My Big Fat Greek Wedding, which it often resembles, it's a glimpse at a world largely ignored by Hollywood. Unlike Wedding, though, Curves presents a realistic world; the performances of America Ferrera, Lupe Ontiveros, and the other cast members are funny and touching yet remain beautifully naturalistic. And, in a marvelous surprise, the movie doesn't shy from subversion; its ugly-duckling leading lady doesn't become a (physical) swan, gets her prince for only the briefest of moments, and doesn't seem to mind one little bit. You go, girl!

It's mainly a bunch of music video-style motorcycle races punctuated with brief interludes that are more dramatic place-holders than story. But a top-notch cast, some flashy camera work, and attitude to spare make BIKER BOYZ highly watchable. It offers a look at a vibrant sub-culture -- a fully-functioning society based on honor, dreams, loyalty, flair, and, of course, a huge helping of extravagantly macho contests. One of the movie's strengths is the way that this sub-culture has its own dignity and honor; it is clear that cheating, hustling, and disloyalty are not allowed and that any challenger is welcome.
The Strider 12 Sport Balance Bike hides prodigious design beneath a veneer of simplicity. It is the most popular balance bike on the market, and we understand why: easy assembly, a wide range of size adjustability, light weight (6.7 pounds), and a low, 8-inch stand-over height for easier balance. Of all of the bikes here, its design feels the most, well, mini-me-friendly with kid-narrow handlebars and toddler-size grips. Its seat post has the widest height adjustability range of any bike we tested (9 inches!). Its simple design includes an ultra-light, maintenance-free nylon bushing headset (the pivot point that lets the handlebar turn), very lightweight plastic wheels, pleasantly grippy foam rubber tires that never need inflating, and footrests, which is a nice feature when a kid starts to try tricks like bunny hops, or just want to rest their feet on a gradual downhill. We also liked the full-length handlebar pad, for when bunny hops go awry. The 12 Sport comes brake-free, but Strider offers an add-on foot brake for hilly terrain.
The movie highlights their experiences on the journey; right from giving lift to a stranger to being arrested by local authorities and being bashed by local goons. A must watch movie for bikers with the soul of a nomad!
